I nearly missed it. I arrived home from work and several packages were waiting for me. A DVD I had ordered, an Apple logo polo shirt and my Roland 1680 multi-track recorder (that I had loaned to a friend who shipped it back to me). So many things, but not what I was hoping for. You see Atlantic records was supposed to send me a promo copy of Yusuf's new album, "An Other Cup."
Shortly after I arrived I had to leave to pick up my car which was in for service. Stepping outside my door I noticed a bulge underneath the mat. "Could this be it," I hoped! I slowly lifted it to reveal a large envelope from Atlantic records! I was so excited!
I'm not going to say too much yet. I really need to listen to the album a few times before I'll be prepared to write a review. But rest assured, a review is coming, and soon. :-)
What I will say is that there are surprises on the record, and that the songs we've already heard sounded much better to me than they did over the Internet. That might be due to the superior sound quality of the CD player in my car, or simply hearing them in context as an album. But if you didn't like some of the things you've heard so far, you may change your mind when you get the CD.
With that, I'll leave you with the track listing. I'll be back soon with a full review!

Thanks for the wonderful commentary, John. Keep us posted!
How exciting. And I'm glad one of the first copies has gone to such a deserving recipient.
I look forward to your review.
Cheers JennyB
One update, the darn CD must be copy protected because it won't play on my computer. In the age of the iPod that's going to make listening to it a bit difficult. I don't own a stand alone CD player anymore. I sure hope my dvd player will play it, otherwise I'll be sitting in my car all night. :-)
:-)
John,
Try holding down C (PC) or Shift (Mac) while inserting the CD to defeat the copy protection. Hopefully that works and you can get the music on to your iPod. Can't wait for your review!
I'm sure the album is awesome... it HAS to be, right? Afterall, he's a fabulous songwriter. But I still won't rush out and get it. My feelings are still hurt! I'll get over it eventually ;o)
Marc,
Unfortunately it's one of those CD's that has "errors" on it that computers choke on but (hopefully) real CD players do not. So my Macs and my work PC laptop simply failed to read it. I tried my DVD player and that wouldn't play it either. So I actually will be stuck listening to it in the car. But I'm not complaining, at least I have it. Curiously track 12 appears to be missing on my copy, or at the very least won't play in my car. So that one will have to remain a mystery until November. :-)
I don't even own a real CD player. It sounds like that might make my decision for me about purchasing the album. :-(
I think it's just the promo copy that's copy protected. I doubt the real CD will be like this.
OK, John.. Is there a note on the CD somewhere that says, "Hello, Mes Amis!" If so, all's forgiven...
Just kidding... (but lucky you!!)
Oh, and Amanda.... just buy a little portable CD player -- they're almost as cheap as a CD!
Oh, thank you John, for the teaser! I anxiously await the CD. I'm sure I will be pleased..
Play it in a CD player, connected up to either a Minidisc or a CD recorder. Make sure the connection is set to "Analogue". Record. There'll be no copy protection in your new version.
C'mon John. Stop keeping us in suspenders. What's it like? (the new album of course).
Cheers Jen
This sounds really nice, I am so looking forward to it.
(Love Rumi, and poetry, I am sure that one is lovely! I remember him saying he liked Rumi, he even read past of the "Reed Flute" at his lecture.)
Thanks for your thoughts on this upcoming cd, John, very nice, Ce
